Entryway

Entryway

Doors at both the front and rear provide cross ventilation and easy access, The wide floorboards are original. The enclosed stairway, common in this period, helped to retain heat, A board above the stairway indicated that blue paint was used here, The windows have been reglazed with early glass, A chair rail protects the plaster walls. Note the strap hinges on the raised paneled doors.

Walls

All the walls in the house are whitewashed plaster, The plaster consists of three layers- the bottom two layers being a mixture of sand and clay with animal hair used as a binder, and the top layer slaked lime. The whitewash was made from liquid limestone, which was easily obtained from oyster shells.
